Beyond its historical charm, the palace serves as a gateway to engaging with the local tribal community and curated tours that delve into the heart of Odisha, encapsulating the essence of incredible India. Unique Activities
Immerse in Culturally-Rich Experiences
Explore tailored experiences at The Belgadia Palace that honour their appreciation for nature and the rich heritage of Mayurbhanj. Witness the captivating Chhau dance performance or engage with a Dokra artist if you have a penchant for art. Dokra art involves crafting intricate metal sculptures through a lost-wax casting technique, often depicting elements of tribal life, mythology, nature and folklore.
If you’re a history enthusiast, delve into the architecture and historical landmarks of pre-independence Mayurbhanj state. Explore the medieval ruins of the 14th-century HaripurGarh Fort or visit a nearby handicraft village.
Consider staying here in July to coincide with the Rath Yatra, also known as the Car Festival of Lord Jagannath. This important Hindu festival is observed in various parts of India and features the procession of deities on chariots, typically pulled by devotees, parading through the streets of the town or city.
Visit the Similipal Elephant and Tiger Reserve
The Similipal Elephant and Tiger Reserve, a renowned UNESCO Biosphere and one of India's premier wildlife parks, is conveniently located just 40 kilometres from The Belgadia Palace. As one of the country's largest and most significant protected areas, it is celebrated for its extensive biodiversity, lush landscapes and varied ecosystems, spanning 2750 square kilometres. Within this expansive reserve, you can explore the scenic Barheipani and Joranda waterfalls, two of the highest in India.
Similipal is home to diverse wildlife, including the elusive melanistic tiger (though sightings are infrequent), along with leopards, elephants, barking and spotted deer, langurs and gaurs. The reserve also boasts a rich avian population, featuring species such as the grey hornbill, Malabar pied hornbill, red jungle fowl, Alexandrine parakeet and the crested serpent eagle.
