Immerse Yourself in the Star Bed Experience
For Jamtara, wildlife conservation involves finding the delicate equilibrium between the well-being of animals, forests and local communities. Collaboration with the ancient tribes is essential, as they’re deeply connected to the land and have witnessed its transformation over time. For generations, villagers have spent nights on raised platforms called machans to guard against animals damaging their crops.
Jamtara offers you the chance to experience this unique nightly vigil that villagers undertake. The Star Bed concept at Jamtara is a unique offering. Sleeping under the night sky in the fields, you become part of the forest's distinct nocturnal life. This experience includes the live symphony of crickets, owls, frogs, jackals and the occasional alarm calls of spotted deer, signalling the presence of predators. It's wilderness in its purest form.

Meet the People
Jamtara Wilderness Camp's history is deeply connected to India's modern tiger conservation movement, originating in the 1960s, when Kailash Sankhala highlighted the alarming extent of tiger hunting threatening the species with extinction. Following his leadership in the nation's inaugural Tiger Census, Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, selected him to head the Project Tiger initiative in 1973.
The Sankhala family's commitment to wildlife is a heritage that underlies all their endeavours. Kailash Sankhala's passion for the wilderness was passed down to his son, Pradeep Sankhala, who redirected it by merging tourism with conservation. This tradition has now been carried forward by the third generation, Amit Sankhala.
As a wanderer himself, Amit has an innate understanding of guests' needs, ensuring a remarkable nature experience and lasting memories. He has assembled a team of like-minded individuals, including knowledgeable naturalists, skilled chefs using local produce and a considerate staff providing small comforts while respecting your privacy.
